Encourage Responsible Pet Ownership

Have all your pets neutered/spayed and help others do so.

1.  See your own veterinarian.

2.  Contact a low-cost spay/neuter clinics.
  • PAL (Prevent A Litter ) at 804-359-MEOW
  • Richmond Spay & Neuter Foundation at 804-344-7001
  • Petfix Coalition (apply to receive discount certificate) at 804-739-7868

3.  Call Operation Catnip at 804-674-0660 for help with sterilizing feral cats.

Help stop pet overpopulation; eliminate unnecessary suffering and the extermination of defenseless animals.

There are many benefits to having your pet sterilized:

  • They tend to live longer.
  • Spayed females do not suffer from ovarian or uterine cancer.
  • Neutered males have less chance of prostate problems.
  • Sterilized cats are much less likely to “mark” or “spray” their territory.
  • Spayed females do not experience messy heat cycles.
  • Sterilized pets are less likely to bite.
  • Sterilized pets are less likely to run off if allowed outside.
  • Neutered/spayed cats are more loving and have better temperaments.

According to the the Petco Foundation:

  • One out of every 10 dogs born ever finds a permanent home.
  • One out of every 12 cats born ever finds a permanent home.
  • 7 million dogs and cats are killed each year in the U. S. because there are not enough homes!

The Humane Society of the United States reports that in 6 years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically be a source of 67,000 dogs.  In 7 years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically be a source of 420,000 cats.

The Question (J. Southern)

I am just a frightened kitten
Born not so long ago
And why I'll never have a home
I really do not know

And, thousands more just like me
Are born each single day
It seems so cruel and heartless
Is there no better way?

Please answer just one question
Since I must shortly die
Why was I brought into this world?
Can someone tell me-why?
